Increased rates of sick leave in the summer hit business hard.

The summer is a wonderful thing, we wait for it through the long winter months and it arrives, bringing colour, long nights, warmth and a general good feeling. However people want to be out in the sun and having fun while it lasts. This means that sickness rates rise in many business during the summer months, some staff take a day off “sick”, because its too nice a day and they want to do something other than work! This has a negative impact on production or service, sometimes mean a higher price for customers and adds extra cost and expense to the business too.

So business need to look at what they can do to attract their staff in during the summer and to help eliminate feigned sickness on a nice day. A summer themed competition or targets with prizes often works well because the office is buzzing, it’s fun and extra things can be won. Managers can use an extra half day holiday or a double lunch break as a bigger prize, making sure there are lots of smaller prizes as incentives to build up to these. Branded sweets, stress balls, mugs, pens, rulers, gift vouchers, swapping work with a manager for a day, are all good incentives to come to work and work hard while you  are there. There might even be a prize for 100%  attendance over the summer months.

If you like the idea of raising attendance and stamping out summer “sickies”, look at www.mikkis.co.uk for inspiration.

Promoting a charity is just as important, as promoting a profit making buiness, if not more so.

Some charities have a great marketing strategy and are really good at getting themselves known, spreading their message and pointing people in the right direction to get help. Some charities feel they can’t spend their fundraising on marketing or promotional items. The work and services that charities provide fill a huge gap that the government and corporate world leave in society. That gap is one of help, support, patience, understanding and care giving. Some charities have government and local authority funding, that needs topping up by fundraising, others have to raise all the money themselves. Promotional items can help these charities in two ways:

  • Items can be branded or plain and used for resale at open days and on stands at shows. The profit then boosts the fundraising effort. If you are going to do this, remember larger quanitites attract much cheaper prices than small quantities, allowing more money to be raised.
  • Branded items, displaying your logo, service details and how to get in contact, will show people where to go to get the help your charity provides. Lots of people don’t ask for help, because they don’t know the help is actually available to them.

These items can be fun or useful, whatever your client group would relate to. For example an adult literacy chairty might use branded notebooks, bookmarks or pens. An animal charity might use animal shaped stress balls.

Supervet on Channel 4, brave, takes risks and believes in his team and the animals.

The Supervet series on Channel 4, features Noel Fitzpatrick and his team of dedicated vetinary visionaries. The team deal with referrals from all over the country that local vets cannot help. A lot of these animals have complex fractures that require pins, plates and sometimes external fixaters. Last nights episodes featured Jasper, a beautiful staffordshire terrier puppy that had birth and growth defects. His elbows on the front legs had never been “in the socket”, and the leg bones were growing at different rates. Not only did he have a series of complex, difficult and lengthy operations, he also had a cardiac arrest due to an anaesthetic beforehis second op. Jasper had nearly 150 physio sessions, nearly 50 hydrotherapy sessions and over 2 months in the purpose built, state of the art clinic. Against the odds, Jasper, a black cat, a beautiful labrador and a pot bellied pig escaped being youthanised and were saved by the “bionic vet”.

Britain is a nation of animal lovers, this programme proves there are owners prepared to pay to save their pet, most of the them are insured, but insurance only goes up to a maximum amount, the owner is then liable for the remainder. The animals themselves, were brave and aided their own recovery with their determination. The vets were also emotionally involved, this clinic is the last chance for these much loved pets.

Promote your charity, business, company or service using an animal theme. We have stressballs in every shape and size, coasters, mouse mats, glasses, mugs, clothing, pencil cases etc.. that can be printed with your animal designs and your logo to attract your clients. People often like people, that like animals, show your company as animal friendly and win new clients. Go to www.mikkis.co.uk for inspiration.

The economy is improving, business can start buying promotional items to grow their customer base.

If someone goes to an exhibition or event, they love to have “freebies” from the different companies and organisations that are at the event. In the last few years these branded promotional gifts have been on the decline due to negative economic factors and reduced cashflow. Happily the economy is looking healthier and continuing to get better and here at Mikkis we have seen companies now starting to spend more again on promotional gifts. Feedback tells us they have noticed the reduced new client numbers after an event and want to start growing again. Events are very expensive and it is important to make the most of them!

There is a vast range of promotional items out there too. It is wise to combine different types of marketing gifts as they have different product life cycles. For example, a pen or a pencil can be low cost and last a long time. A mouse mat that includes a calendar is very useful and will last a whole year. A sticker or badge is good for immediate promotion and brand recognition but has a shorter lifespan, they do instantly encourage people over to your exhibition stand though. However the very cost effective fridge magnet can last for years and be seen by all the family and visitors to the home. Bags that are branded could be used each time a shoppng trip happens. Executive gifts like leather document holders will last for years and although much more expensive, exude quality and will keep your brand alive much longer and do provide value for money.

If you want help with your promotions, we have many years experience and thousands of different products to choose from. Look on www.mikkis.co.uk for inspiration.

GCSE and A-Level exams starting now for thousands of school and college students.

This is the time of year students in years 11, 12 and 13 dread the most! Exam time. Some children do anything upward of 6 GCSE’s with students in grammer, selective and private schools doing as many as 14 or 15 GCSE’s. At AS level anything from 2 to 5 subjects and often one is dropped for A level the following year. This is a very stressful time for everyone. Schools and parents worry are the students doing enough revision and taking it seriously enough, the students feel stressed and are torn between studying and wanting to enjoy the nice weather coming and finding time for some work or hobbies.

Today for many is the last day of full time school as study leave commences. This allows students to study and revise, at home or at school if they wish and prepare for their exams. GCSE’s started this week for a couple of examing boards but the majority start next week. AS and A levels are not quite starting yet but soon. Students will already have applied for college, 6th form and university places and received their conditional offers, all now depends on the grades! The students are under lots of pressure from parents, offer letters, their schools and colleges and primarily from themselves.

The rules are strict about what you can take into an exam room. If you are a college, 6th form, University or service wanting to appeal to potential students, why not give them an exam kit printed with your details and logo. For example, the kind of pens, pencils and rulers in a see through pencil case, branded with your logo! Advertising for your educational establishment and an easy way for the students to get their exam tools right and organised, all in one go. If you want to talk more about this or any other promotional items, please call us at Mikkis on 0800 731 0301, email us at sales@mikkis.co.uk, or look at www.mikkis.co.uk.

Pinnochio Rex – new type of dinosaur discovered!

In China they found a skeleton, on a construction site,  that looked related to the Tyrannosaurus rex, it is 9 metres long and has a longer snout with a row of horns on top, making him look different to the other tyrannosaurs.

It was sent to Edinburgh University to be  identified by scientists. Dr Steve Brusatte said “this is the slam dunk we needed – the long-snouted tyrannosaurs were real”
The official name is Qianzhousaurus sinensis, the nickname Pinnochio rex was given because of the extra long nose!  The skeleton is 66 million years old. Pinnochio may have been faster and more stealthy than the other dinosaurs like him.

It is always really exciting to have new species of animal and dinosaurs identified. Under the surface of the earth there are probably still quite a few yet to be discovered. There are some amazing natural history museums around the UK, where we can see many different skeletons and learn about the creatures past and present. The London museum has 60 million life science specimens, many of these are exhibited. The specimens are flora, fauna, fossil, mineral, insects, dinosaur, human and animal.

If you want to own part of our natural history, there are fossil shops in coastal areas where fossils are prevalent, such as Lyme Regis in the centre of the Jurrasic Coast, in Dorset.
To promote your fossil shop, museum or Jurrasic coast tours, why not use promtional marketing gifts such as pens, mugs, fridge magnets, stress balls and bags. go to www.mikkis.com for inspiration.
